สืบเนื่องจากปัญหาความคับแค้นใจเรื่องคุณภาพของภาพที่ได้รับจาก Nikkor Z 180-600 f/5.6-6.3 VR ที่ถ่ายย้อนแสงแล้วภาพฟุ้งมาก โดยเฉพาะภาพนกเดินดงอกเทา ที่หาดูไม่ได้ง่ายนัก ถ่ายมาแล้วได้คุณภาพแบบนี้มันเสียดายเงิน เสียดายเวลา ซึ่งสถานการณ์ประเภทนี้พลาดแล้วอาจจะพลาดเลย เราไม่ใช่นักดูนกมืออาชีพ ไม่ได้มีโอกาสกลับมาอีกบ่อย ๆ กลับมาจากทริปนั้นเอยอุ้มน้องไปคืนแล้วเอา Nikkor Z 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 VR S มาทดแทน (กันไม่ได้) ถึงแม้จะเก่ากว่ามากแต่มี S-line การันตี ก็หวังว่ามันจะให้ภาพที่ดีและน่าสนใจกว่า มาลองกันครับ

Due to the dissatisfaction with the image quality from the Nikkor Z 180-600 f/5.6-6.3 VR, especially when shooting against the light resulting in very soft images, particularly the Turdus feae, which was not easy to find. It's disappointing to have invested money and time only to end up with this quality. Such situations are regrettable and may be missed entirely. We are not professional bird watchers and may not have the opportunity to return often. So, we decided to return it and try out the Nikkor Z 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 VR S instead. Although it's much older, it's S-line certified. We hope it will deliver better and more interesting images. Let's give it a try.

ไม่แน่ใจว่ากระแสช่างภาพสมัยนี้จะเป็นอย่างไร แต่ช่วงสิบกว่าปีก่อนที่เล่นคลุกคลีอยู่ในวงการ D-SLR หลากหลายยี่ห้อ เลนส์ช่วง 100-400 ถ้าช่วงซูมเท่านี้เป๊ะ ถ้าเอาค่ายหลัก ๆ สมัยนั้น หลายคนคงนึกถึง Canon ซูมชัก 100-400 ที่คลาสสิกมาก และถ้าจะเอาใกล้เคียงก็จะมี Nikon 80-400 อีกตัว และในความรู้สึกของผมมันก็น่าจะเป็นเลนส์ช่วงที่คนไม่ค่อยซื้อมาใช้กันมากนัก ราคามันค่อนข้างสูงและรูรับแสงค่อนข้างแคบ ส่วนมากก็จะไปช่วงยอดฮิตอย่าง 70-200 มากกว่า หรือถ้าไปสายส่องนกส่องสัตว์ก็ไปเลนส์ทางยาวโฟกัสเดี่ยวแบบ 300 400 600 มม. ก็ว่ากันไป เลนส์ซูมช่วง 100-400 มม.จึงเหมือนเป็นตัวกลาง ๆ ที่อยากจะถ่ายแบบ 70-200 ก็ได้แต่สู้ไม่ได้เพราะรูรับแสงแคบ จะยิงนกยิงสัตว์ก็สู้พวกเลนส์ Prime ทางยาวโฟกัสเดี่ยวไม่ได้

I'm not sure what the photography trend is nowadays, but about ten years ago, when I was actively involved in the DSLR scene, there were various brands and lenses available. The 100-400mm range was well-known, with Canon's classic 100-400mm zoom lens being a standout choice for many. If one wanted something similar, Nikon had the 80-400mm. In my opinion, lenses in this range weren't very popular choices back then. They were relatively expensive and had narrow apertures. Most photographers preferred the 70-200mm range for versatility. For birdwatching or wildlife photography, they would opt for single focal length telephoto lenses like the 300mm, 400mm, or 600mm. The 100-400mm zoom lens seemed to be in the middle ground, suitable for various purposes but not excelling in any particular one due to its narrow aperture.

หลังจากนั้นไม่นาน Tamron กับ Sigma ที่ออกเลนส์ super telephoto zoom แล้วจำได้ว่าดังอยู่คือช่วง 150-600 และช่วงอื่น ๆ ราว ๆ นี้อีกหลายตัว ที่คุณภาพดีมากพอที่จะใช่ถ่ายภาพกันแบบซีเรียสได้ (ก่อนหน้านั้นเท่าที่จำได้ก็เหมือนจะมีเลนส์แนวนี้นะครับ แต่คุณภาพมันยังไม่ได้) ซึ่งตามความรู้สึกตอนนั้นมันก็น่าจะขายได้ดีอยู่ และ Nikon ก็ออกช่วง 200-500 มาอีก ซึ่งถือว่าดีมาก เป็นเลนส์ที่คุ้มค่าตลอดกาลตัวนึงเลย เท่าที่จำความได้ เลนส์ช่วง 100-400 สมัยนั้นไม่ค่อยได้เห็นคนใช้กันสักเท่าไร เจ้า Canon 100-400 ซูมชักตัวเดิมก็ลากขายกันอยู่ในไลน์ผลิตอย่างยาวนาน จนถึงช่วงปี 2016 Panasonic ออก 100-400 ตามด้วย 2017 Tamron, 2017 Sony, 2020 Sigma, และในปี 2021 Canon จึงออก 100-400 f/5.6-8 IS USM  ตัวใหม่ภายใต้เมาท์ RF (ไม่ค่อยเข้าใจเหมือนกันว่าพอเป็นเมาท์ RF แล้วทำไมแคนอนมักมีแต่เลนส์รูรับแสงแคบ ๆ) ซึ่ง 2021 ก็เป็นปีเดียวกับที่ Nikon ออก 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 S ตัวนี้มาพอดิบพอดี และถือว่าเป็นเลนส์ช่วง 100-400 ตัวแรกของค่ายด้วยครับ (ถ้าจะไม่นับเจ้า 80-400 น่ะนะครับ) เป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่าในช่วง 7-8 ปีให้หลังมานี้มีเลนส์ช่วงนี้เปิดตัวกันมาเยอะพอควร ส่วนตัวผมคิดว่ามันกลาง ๆ และอเนกประสงค์ดีนะ ซูมได้มากกว่า 200 มม. ไปได้ถึง 400 มม. ซึ่งก็มากพอใช้ ถึงแม้จะไม่มากเท่า Super telephoto ช่วงอื่น ๆ แต่ก็แลกมาด้วยน้ำหนักที่เบากว่าครึ่งนึง

  Not long after that, Tamron and Sigma released super telephoto zoom lenses. Remembering that there were lenses around the 150-600mm range and similar ranges as well. These lenses were of good enough quality to be used for serious photography (previously, there seemed to be lenses like this, but their quality wasn't up to par). It felt like they were selling well at that time. Nikon also released their 200-500mm lens, which was excellent. From what I can recall, it was considered an all-time value for money. The 100-400mm range lenses weren't commonly seen being used back then. Canon's classic 100-400mm zoom lens was still being sold for a long time. Then, in around 2016, Panasonic released their 100-400mm lens, followed by Tamron in 2017, Sony in 2017, Sigma in 2020, and in 2021, Canon released the new 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens under the RF mount (it's not very clear why Canon tends to have narrow aperture lenses under the RF mount). In the same year, Nikon also introduced their 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 S lens. Nikon's lens was the first 100-400mm lens from the company (if we don't count the 80-400mm). It's noticeable that in the past 7-8 years, there have been quite many lenses in this range introduced, which is reasonable. Personally, I think they're versatile and desirable. They can zoom from over 200mm to 400mm, which is quite usable. Although they may not reach the same extent as other super telephoto lenses, they compensate with being lighter by a half.

สำหรับใครอยากจัดชุดกล้องแล้วหาเลนส์เทเลดี ๆ สักตัว จากประสบการณ์ที่ถ่ายภาพมาผมว่าต้องตัดสินใจให้ดี เพราะ 70-200 f2.8 กับ 100-400 f4.5-5.6 มันราคาใกล้เคียงกัน (ของ Nikon 100-400 ราคาแพงกว่าด้วย) ผมว่าน้อยคนที่จะซื้อเก็บไว้ทั้งสองตัวเพราะช่วงทับกันค่อนข้างมาก ถ้าคาดว่าจะถ่ายในที่แสงน้อย หรืองาน event ต่าง ๆ บ่อย ๆ ผมเชียร์ให้ไปเอา 70-200 ครับ ถ่ายคนทัศนมิติยังพอไหวหน้าไม่แบนมากจนเกินไป ได้รูรับแสงกว้าง จัดการกับจุดรบกวนในที่แสงน้อยได้ดี ส่วนใครมาสายเที่ยว Outdoor หน่อย ถ่ายกีฬากลางแจ้ง ผมเชียร์ให้มาที่ 100-400 โอกาสได้ภาพสูงกว่า รูรับแสงแคบไม่เป็นไรถ้าสภาพแวดล้อมมีแสงสว่างมากพอ ขนาดและน้ำหนักไม่ต่างกันมากนัก ส่วนพวกที่มาสายสัตว์ป่า นก เลนส์ Prime telephoto ไปเลยจะเข้าทางกว่าครับ เพราะ 400 บางทีถ่ายภาพนกไกล ๆ มันก็ไปไม่ถึงเหมือนกัน

For those who want to assemble a camera kit and are looking for a good telephoto lens, from my experience in photography, I suggest making a careful decision. Because the prices of the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 are quite close (Nikon's 100-400 is slightly more expensive), few people would buy both since they overlap significantly in focal length. If you anticipate shooting in low light conditions or frequent events, I recommend going for the 70-200mm. It handles dimensional portraits well without flattening the face too much, has a wide aperture, and deals well with noise in low light. On the other hand, if you're more into outdoor travel or sports photography, I'd recommend the 100-400mm. You'll have more opportunities for higher-quality shots, and the narrow aperture isn't a problem if the environment is adequately lit. The size and weight difference isn't significant. As for those interested in wildlife photography, a prime telephoto lens would be the best choice. Sometimes, when shooting distant birds at 400mm, it's just not enough.

เลนส์ Nikkor Z 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 VR S ที่หยิบมาทดแทนตัวเดิมอาจไม่ได้ตอบสนองช่วงเทเลที่ไกลขนาดถ่ายนกถ่ายหนูได้ดีเท่าเดิม แต่อย่างน้อยผมเชื่อในคุณภาพของภาพที่ได้มากกว่าซึ่งตรงนั้นเป็น Pain point หลักของผมเลย ส่วนผลพลอยได้คือตัวเล็กลง และน้ำหนักเบาลงครึ่งนึง หน้าเลนส์จาก 95mm ลดลงมาเหลือ 77mm เท่านั้นเอง และข้อดีอีกนิดก็คือได้ความสว่างเพิ่มมาอีกหน่อย จะ 1/3 stop หรือ ½ stop ก็ถือว่าดีกว่า โดยเฉพาะในบางสถานการณ์ที่ต้องเอาไปถ่ายในที่แสงน้อย แค่ 1 stop ก็ให้ผลของภาพที่ต่างกันมาก ๆ แล้วครับ (ลองมีลูก แล้วไปถ่ายลูกแข่งกีฬาในร่มดู จะเข้าใจดีครับ)

The Nikkor Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S lens that I picked up to replace the 180-600 may not be as responsive in the far telephoto range for shooting birds or mice as before. However, at least I have faith in the overall image quality, which is my main pain point. On the bright side, it's smaller and lighter, reducing weight by half. The lens diameter has also decreased from 95mm to 77mm. Another slight advantage is the increased brightness, perhaps by 1/3 or 1/2 stop, which is better, especially in low-light situations. Just a 1-stop difference can make a significant impact on the resulting image quality (try taking photos of children playing indoor sports to understand better).

ภายนอกของเลนส์ตัวนี้การออกแบบไม่ได้มีอะไรพิเศษ จะมีแตกต่างจากปกติที่คุ้นชินอยู่ 2 อย่างคือ จอ LCD ที่ไร้ประโยชน์ กับ Collar ที่ถอดออกไม่ได้นั่นเอง ขออนุญาตพูดถึงตัว Collar นิดนึง มันถอดออกมาทั้งวงไม่ได้ แต่ถอดขาออกมาได้โดยการหมุนปลดล็อกแล้วสไลด์ออกเลย และก็ตามเคยครับ ส่วนที่ผมไม่ชอบก็คือขาตั้งตรง Collar มันสั้น หิ้วเดินไปเดินมาจับไม่ค่อยสะดวก (อันนี้เรื่องส่วนตัวสุด ๆ) สวิตช์ข้างตัวเลนส์มี AF-MF และระยะในการโฟกัสว่าจะ Full หรือ 3m-infinity ปุ่ม L-Fn มีปุ่มเดียวด้านซ้าย ส่วน L-Fn2 มี 4 ปุ่มทุก ๆ 90 องศา กดอันไหนได้กดไปเลยเพราะเป็นปุ่มสั่งงานเดียวกัน ปุ่มพวกนี้ custom กันได้ในเมนูนะครับ ส่วนฮูดที่แถมให้มากับตัวนี้เป็นแบบกลีบดอกไม้ หมุนล็อกโดยมีปุ่มกดปลดล็อกฮูดครับ ภายนอกของเลนส์ 100-400 ทั้งหมดทั้งปวงนี้ก็ถือว่าดีตามเลนส์ธรรมดา ๆ ตัวหนึ่ง ตรงนี้ยังต้องขอเอ่ยชื่นชม Sigma 150-600 f5-6.3 DG DN OS Sport (https://www.paronya.com/single-post/sigma-150-600-f5-6-3-dg-dn-os-sport) อีกครั้ง เพราะเป็นเลนส์เทเลซูมที่ออกแบบภายนอกได้ประทับใจผู้ใช้งานอย่างผมมากที่สุด ถ้าผมเป็น Nikon ผมจะไปหาซื้อตัวคนออกแบบมา ฮ่ะ ๆ ๆ

The exterior design of this lens doesn't have anything particularly special, but there are two things that differ from what we're used to: the useless LCD screen and the collar that can't be removed. Let me talk about the collar. It can't be removed entirely, but you can detach the leg by unlocking and sliding them out. As always, what I don't like is the short length of the collar's leg, which makes it inconvenient to carry around (this is purely personal preference). The switch on the side of the lens has options for AF-MF and focus range: Full or 3m-infinity. The L-Fn1 button is a single button on the left side, while the L-Fn2 has four buttons at every 90-degree angle. You can press any of these buttons because they serve the same function. These buttons can be customized in the menu. The hood that comes with this lens is a petal-shaped hood, and you can lock it by pressing the lock button. Overall, the exterior of the 100-400mm lens is as good as any regular lens. Here, I have to give credit to Sigma once again, particularly for their 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sport lens, because it's a telephoto zoom lens with an exterior design that impresses users like me the most. If I was a Nikon director, I'd definitely look for someone from Sigma to design my lenses. Haha!

เลนส์ตัวนี้ซูมแล้วกระบอกยื่นนะครับ แต่ยื่นออกมานิดเดียวยังรักษาสมดุลของเลนส์เวลาถือถ่ายได้ดี แต่ก็อาจมีคำถามอยู่สักหน่อยว่ามันจะกันน้ำกันฝุ่นได้ดีแค่ไหน ถ้าเปรียบเทียบกับ 180-600 ที่ซูมแล้วไม่ยืด ทุกอย่างรวมจบอยู่ในกระบอกเลนส์ทั้งหมด

This lens zooms, and the barrel extends, but even when extended just a bit, it still maintains good balance when held for shooting. However, there might be some questions about how well it can resist water and dust. If we compare it to the 180-600, which doesn't extend when zooming, everything is contained within the lens barrel.

คุณภาพของภาพ (Image quality)

ดีจริงจังทั้งความคมและคอนทราสต์ เป็นเลนส์เทเลซูมที่ให้ภาพมีมิติเด้งดีมาก โดยเฉพาะเมื่อมีแสงดี ๆ สักหน่อย ถ่ายแล้วร้องว้าว ราวกับถ่ายด้วย APO Summicron ก็มิปาน ภาพคมดีชนิดที่ว่าเอาใส่ Super resolution ใน Lightroom แล้ว crop มาโชว์กันตามภาพนี้ยังให้ผลเป็นที่น่าพอใจ อย่างไรก็ตามด้วยความที่มีหน้าเลนส์ขนาดเล็กในบางกรณีที่ถ่ายแล้วเห็นโบเก้มาก ๆ จะมีการหมุนวนของฉากหลังอยู่บ้าง เป็นเรื่องปกติปกติของเลนส์ราคาถูก (ใช่เหรออออ แต่มันถูกแล้วแหละครับในไลน์ Super telephoto) และตามปกติของเลนส์ซูมระยะนี้ (อีกนั่นแหละ) โบเก้ไม่สวยครับ

Truly impressive in both sharpness and contrast, this telephoto zoom lens delivers images with some "pop," especially in good lighting conditions. When shooting, it sings like an APO Summicron lens, providing razor-sharp images. However, due to its small lens front, in some cases, there may be noticeable background rotation, which is typical for budget lenses (yes, it's affordable in the Super telephoto lineup) and typical for zoom lenses of this range (there it is again). The bokeh may not be aesthetically pleasing.

What comes included with this lens is its capability to shoot close-ups at approximately a 1:2.6 magnification ratio. It may not reach the level of macro 1:1, but at this magnification ratio, it's considered quite versatile for capturing various interests.

However, long telephoto lenses may be limited in capturing certain types of images due to the compressed perspective. When used to photograph people or animals, they may result in flat-looking images that lack depth, such as the flat-faced dog in this image.

โดยรวมถือว่าผมพอใจในคุณภาพของภาพมาก ต่อช่วงกับ Nikkor Z 24-120 f/4 S ได้ดี คุณภาพของภาพอยู่ในระดับเดียวกันสามารถสลับกันใช้ได้อย่างไรรอยต่อโดยที่คาแรกเตอร์ของภาพไม่แตกต่างกัน แต่ติดอยู่นิดเดียวก็คือ 400mm สำหรับผมก็ยังรู้สึกว่ามันไม่สุด ไม่เหมือน 600mm ถ่ายนกถ่ายหนูมันยังไม่สะใจ เราเองก็ใช้แค่ Zf 24mp จะใช้วิธีครอปมาความละเอียดก็เหลือแค่ 10mp ถ้าได้ไปใช้ Z8 ก็คงดีครับ

Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the image quality, comparable to the Nikkor Z 24-120 f/4 S. The image quality is consistent, allowing for seamless interchangeability without any noticeable differences in image characteristics. However, the limitation lies in the 400mm range. For me, it still feels insufficient, unlike the 600mm, especially for capturing birds and small animals. Personally, I'm using the Zf 24MP, and even with cropping, it reduces the resolution to just 10MP. If I were to use the Z8, it would likely yield better results.

สรุปสุดท้ายว่า Nikkor Z 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 VR S เป็นเลนส์ที่ให้คุณภาพดีมาก ถ้าใครจะไป 180-600 ขอให้คิดดี ๆ เรื่องคุณภาพของภาพก่อนถลำลึกลงไปนะครับมาลองเล่นตัวนี้ก่อน ยอมรับจริง ๆ ครับว่าระหว่าง 180-600 กับ 100-400 เป็นสองตัวที่ผมเลือกค่อนข้างยากมาก อย่างไรก็ตามสำหรับ 100-400 S เองก็อาจยังไม่ใช่เลนส์ตัวจบสำหรับสาย Telephoto เพราะระยะมันสุดที่ 400mm f/5.6 แต่มันก็เป็นเลนส์อเนกประสงค์ที่ให้คุณภาพดี การจะไปใช้เลนส์ฟิกซ์ 600mm f/6.3 S  ที่คุณภาพหายห่วงแน่นอนแต่ราคาก็หายห่วงไปด้วย (ประมาณแสนเก้า) หรือจะไป 600mm f/4 TC VR S ที่ราคาเกือบหกแสนก็เลิกคิดไปได้เลย การใช้งานทั่วไปก็ค่อนข้างจำกัดคาดว่าก็ไม่ได้โคจรมาพบกันครับ ก็ได้แต่หวังว่าต่อไปจะได้ใช้เลนส์ซูมแบบระยะจบ ๆ ไปเลย เช่น Nikkor MC 7-1000 f/2 VR S  อะไรแบบนี้ครับ ล้านนึงก็ซื้อครับ สวัสดี

In summary, the Nikkor Z 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 VR S is a lens that offers exceptional image quality. If anyone is considering the 180-600, I would advise them to carefully consider the image quality before diving in. I must admit that choosing between the 180-600 and 100-400 S was quite challenging for me. However, the 100-400 S may not be the ultimate telephoto lens due to its maximum range of 400mm at f/5.6, but it still provides excellent image quality. As for opting for the 600mm f/6.3 S lens, although the image quality is undoubtedly exceptional, the price is also a concern. Similarly, the 600mm f/4 TC VR S, priced at nearly a car (in Thailand), is also out of consideration. General usage may be somewhat limited, and I don't expect to encounter it often. However, I remain hopeful that in the future, I'll be able to use a zoom lens like the Nikkor MC 7-1000 f/2 VR S. If something like that comes out, I'd be willing to pay a million. Goodbye.
